Writing A Research Essay?

I need to know how to write a research essay, now i know how to do it normally but there is a twist on this one, i have to write it about a story or poem and that presents a challenge. so say i wrote about Langston Hughes poem birmingham sunday, other than writing about how he said the girls were straight up slaughtered, and collecting info, how would i do this paper?
