Do any other black women feel like this way about their hair?

I live in the south . The " dirty south" ,but have wondered one thing. Why do other people care so much about how I wear my dog gone hair? I am a plain Jane type of women . I mean I love my hair wouldnt trade it for the world ,but it seems like every I go someone is always complaing about me not having my hair fixed . I am not a big fan of always getting it done and hate wearing weaves . I would rather spend my time swimming,riding motorcycles,horseback riding etc....the sitting in a salon. I constantly hear men complain that they hate see black women with weaves but I get ignored because I'm not wearing one ? I'm mean come on its 85 degrees at midnight down here . That is a perfect time for night ...I mean night swim lol. Can somebody please explain why ? I love the water in the summer pools,lakes,beaches you name it. So spending hundreds of dollars to get my hair done only to have it ruined by going a pool party a day later is crazy .sorry about the typos I'm typing this from my phone. I when I say don't get my hair I talking about just wearing it in a ponytail or straight down . Not walking around with a rats nest on my head .
